Access to the forest is most commonly along dirt roads that lead past rustic settlements to abandoned mines and rugged mountain passes. Chalk Creek Canyon is no exception, with the Mary Murphy Mine and the Alpine Railroad Tunnel as attractions. In fall, the drive passes many great views and through pleasant stands of aspen.
