Upgraded to a National Park in October 1999, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one
of Colorado's hidden treasures. Carved by the raging Gunnison river, this deep gorge
has steep 2,000 foot cliffs of marbled granite. Challenging hikes lead into the canyon,
but most visitors content themselves with a drive along the rim and a gawp over the
sheer sides to the river below.
