Track Day (172 vs. Caterfields)
Posted (on the EVO forum) - 25 Aug 2001

I spent today at Kemble Airfield on a Trackday with EasyTrack. It was a small friendly gathering of just about 15 cars as an introductory event at this new venue. The starting participants were my 172, an Imprezza Wagon, a Mini, a Camaro and various Lotus and Westerhams / Caterfields. Mark K from this forum was there as my passenger and Mark R joined later and three wheeled his Williams about.

This was a first look at the new EasyTrack airfield venue, which will be resurfaced soon and include a longish twisty layout. For now though the runways and taxiways were in use marked out with tyres and cones. Several of these made up 'gates' in a slalom course, ski-run style. The course was varied with slow corners, a slalom, a fast straight and a couple of 'bus-stop' style chicanes. There were huge run offs (for the Camaro) and a long enough straight for the Caterfields to reach launch velocity before the big turn.

It was the first track event with my muppet suspension and new brakes. They have proved themselves to be a worthy purchase and I was racing about the place much faster than on previous tries. On a few laps I really pushed it and managed to reel in the Imprezza and several of the Caterfields. It's quite a buzz to catch one of those and blast past it on the runway! These antics got me quite a bit of attention and several Westerham owners came over after and asked what I'd done to my 172. :)

However, the muppet in me was fighting to get out and so I spent most of the afternoon flicking the tail out and doing humungous drifts and slides. This was a lot more fun than the 'normal' driving, but the car is suffering. The two front tyres are far from road legal and as good as slick. To add to this, on my way home the brakes started to go. I though they just weren't hot for a while, but more or less at home, they started to scrape. One front pad is totally done in and the other not much better. This has resulted in damaged a disc, but hopefully it will still be serviceable.

So, new tyres and brakes required, but huge fun had so the day was a true success. I'm chuffed that this new venue is so close to me, and I'm sure I'll be going often in future.
